How to Teach Your Dog to Sit, Stay, and Come

Teaching your dog basic commands like “sit,” “stay,” and “come” is essential for building a strong bond and ensuring their safety PUPPY TRAINING. Here’s how to train your dog to master these important commands:

1. Sit

  • Step 1: Hold a treat near your dog’s nose to get their attention.
  • Step 2: Slowly move the treat upwards, over their head. As their head follows the treat, their bottom should naturally lower to the ground.
  • Step 3: Once they’re sitting, immediately say “sit” and reward them with the treat and praise.
  • Step 4: Repeat several times, and gradually use the command without the treat to reinforce the behavior.

2. Stay

  • Step 1: Start with your dog in a “sit” position.
  • Step 2: Open your palm towards them, saying “stay” in a calm, firm voice.
  • Step 3: Take a step back. If your dog stays in place, reward them with a treat and praise.
  • Step 4: Gradually increase the distance and duration, rewarding your dog for staying put.
  • Step 5: Practice in different environments to build their focus and consistency.

3. Come

  • Step 1: Start with your dog on a leash in a controlled area.
  • Step 2: Kneel down and say “come” in a happy, excited voice.
  • Step 3: When your dog approaches, reward them with treats and praise.
  • Step 4: Repeat often, and gradually practice in more distracting environments. Always use positive reinforcement for coming when called.

With patience, consistency, and positive reinforcement, your dog will soon be reliable with these basic commands, making walks, playtime, and everyday activities safer and more enjoyable.
